Recently, my husband and I sat down on the couch to enjoy an episode of Wilfred – the quirky show with Ryan (Elijah Wood) and his neighbor’s dog Wilfred (Jason Gann in a giant dog suit). Our daughter was off in her bedroom ignoring us for the evening and the little man was relaxing on the couch playing with a toy.
Just a minute or so into the show, Wilfred reached over and smacked Elijah Wood. The little man let out the most horribly shocked sound and sucked in all of the air around him. His whole body tensed up and he stared at the screen with giant anime eyes.
That one little scene challenged the little man’s entire world view. It may have set off a toddler existential crisis.
In his world, stuffies never hit. Sometimes they tickle and kiss. Sometimes they jump off the couch and fly through the air with reckless abandonment before a rough landing on the floor. Sometimes they regret getting too close to the dog. But they never, ever hit.
Wilfred is going to be an after-bedtime show now.
